Broadcast Time: 2:20 PM Date: January 15, 2025 Type: Community Safety Alert (CSA) Multiple Small Fires On St. George Campus DESCRIPTION An individual accessed multiple buildings on the St. George campus over the past 24 hours, lit small paper fires and left. The fires were quickly extinguished with no injuries and only minor property damage. Toronto police and Campus Safety are investigating these incidents, some of which were at Victoria and St. Michael's colleges. Campus Safety has increased patrols. LOCATION University of Toronto St. George campus ( MAP ) ACTIONS TO TAKE Do not allow anyone to enter behind you through doors with controlled access, even if they appear familiar or claim to have forgotten their credentials. Everyone must use their own credentials to enter secured areas. If someone asks you to hold the door, politely direct them to the proper entry procedures. If you discover a fire of any size, activate the nearest fire alarm, leave the area and call 911. If you are able, use the nearest fire extinguisher. Report any suspicious activity to Campus Safety at 416-978-2222 without delay. If you see something unusual or out of place, speak up and report it to Campus Safety: Your vigilance could prevent further incidents. Keep all doors to stairwells, offices and other restricted areas closed and locked when not in use. Remain aware of your surroundings. Know the location of fire extinguishers, fire-alarm pull stations and emergency exits. Always treat every fire alarm seriously and follow the building evacuation procedures. We will provide updates as the situation develops. Your co-operation and awareness are essential to keeping everyone safe. It is reported that: students at the University of Toronto have received fraudulent emails appearing to be from the University of Toronto the email stressed that outstanding tuition fees needed to be paid immediately or else they would lose access to academic services recipients are provided with an email address and instructed to send a bank e-transfer The Toronto Police Service's Financial Crimes Unit is advising the public to be aware of the following red flags that can indicate fraud: emails that appear to come from university staff but request payment to personal or non-university email accounts pressure to send large sums of money quickly, with threats of losing admission or housing requests for payment by Interac e-Transfer follow-up emails demanding additional payments once the first transfer is made To avoid being a victim of fraud, remember that: universities will never request tuition payments via personal email accounts or third-party services such as Outlook, Gmail, or Hotmail always verify payment requests directly with your school’s financial services office using official contact information from the university’s website if you receive a suspicious email, do not click links, download attachments, or send money report suspicious emails to your university’s I.T. and/or security department if you have already sent money, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to police The Toronto Police Service's Financial Crimes Unit encourages students to remain vigilant, especially at the start of each academic term when fraudsters often target those making tuition and housing payments. It is reported that: the victim was located laying on the ground with visible injuries officers began lifesaving measures the victim was pronounced deceased on scene The victim has been identified as Mario Ferreira, 60, of Toronto. On Thursday, March 20, 2025, at approximately 8:21 a.m., emergency services responded to a call in the Queen's Park Crescent and College Street area. It is reported that: the victim was located laying on the ground with visible injuries officers began lifesaving measures the victim was pronounced deceased on scene The victim has been identified as Mario Ferreira, 60, of Toronto. Officers immediately commenced an investigation and obtained video footage of the area. It was discovered that: the victim was laying on a bench in the area of 6 Queen's Park Crescent the suspect approached the victim with an object and assaulted him, the assault is believed to be unprovoked the suspect then fled the area on foot The suspect is described as male, medium to large build, approximately 200 lbs., with a black beard and black hair in short dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing a beige camouflage short sleeve shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black and blue backpack. The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see the suspect, do not approach him, please call 911 immediately. Images of the suspect have been released. This is Toronto's 5th Homicide of 2025. Broadcast Time: 16:40 Date: February 22, 2024 Type: Community Safety Alert (CSA) The University of Toronto Campus Safety is alerting our tri-campus community about repeated acts of voyeurism at New College on St. George campus, despite an arrest in early January. The incidents have occurred in publicly accessible washrooms, and a washroom in Wilson Hall residence (the residence is key-accessed). This alert is being shared with our full community due to the repeated, persistent nature of these incidents, and because many of you travel from Mississauga or Scarborough to St. George campus for classes, labs or other purposes. We encourage all members of our community to exercise vigilance and to report any behaviour of concern to Campus Safety (416-978-2222). On Thursday, Feb. 15, an individual held an iPhone over an occupied shower stall in Wilson Residence (which requires a key to access). On Wednesday, Feb. 7, an individual held an iPhone over an occupied stall in a publicly accessible women’s washroom in New College – in this case, a person of interest was captured on CCTV. On Jan. 9, an individual held an iPhone over an occupied shower stall in Wilson Residence. The New College residence community was informed of each of these incidents, including the latest incident last week through direct email outreach, onsite signage, and via a Campus Safety Community Alert that was posted on washroom doors, distributed in person and slipped under bedroom doors. Multiple measures have been taken to increase security and deter the individual(s) responsible for these acts of voyeurism. These acts of sexual violence are under joint investigation by Campus Safety and Toronto Police Service. If anyone has information pertaining to any of these cases, please contact Campus Safety at (416) 978-2323. Update your info in U of T’s new alert system The University of Toronto recently upgraded UTAlert, a rapid notification system that is used to spread important campus information such as snow closures, building evacuations and safety messages. As part of the upgrade, all community members (even those who have previously provided their information) are asked to visit the UTAlert webpage and enter their cellphone numbers. This will allow you to receive critical updates by text. You can also download UTAlert’s Alertable app and receive additional safety tools and push notifications.
